The Alvernia University International Students Scholarships offers a limited number of scholarships to qualified undergraduate degree-seeking students. Interested candidates must complete a separate scholarship application in addition to an application for admission.

Alvernia University is a private Franciscan Roman Catholic university in Reading, Pennsylvania. The university was once known as Alvernia College, the school gained university status in 2008.

It was established in 1958 by the Bernardine Sisters of the Third Order of St. Francis first as a college for the sisters and then as a four-year liberal arts college.

However, most of the college’s renovated classrooms and offices had been used for elementary and secondary education before 1958. It’s first building, Francis Hall, was built in 1926 and originally housed an orphanage.

Alvernia University received its charter from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in 1960 and was first approved in 1967 by the Commission of Middle States Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools. In 1961, the college accepted its first lay females students. Then in 1971, the university admitted its first male commuting students, and in 1973, the first male resident students were admitted.

In 2008, Alvernia University celebrated its 50th anniversary and was granted university status by the Pennsylvania Department of Education. The university offers more than 50 undergraduate majors and minors. Pre-professional programs are also available in dentistry, law, medicine, pharmacy, and veterinary studies. Master’s degrees are awarded in occupational therapy, business administration, nursing, community counseling, education, and liberal studies.

In addition, Alvernia University offers a seven-year Doctorate in Physical Therapy (DPT) program. A Doctor of Philosophy in leadership is also available. Since 1967, the Middle Staothwtes Association of Colleges and Schools has granted university accreditation. The Education program for elementary and secondary teachers is accredited by the Pennsylvania Department of Education.The Occupational Therapy program is fully approved by the American Council of Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE). The Bachelor of Science in Nursing also has approval by the Pennsylvania State Board of Nursing and is approved by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).

Furthermore, the Athletic Training program is approved by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs in cooperation with the Joint Review Committee on Educational Programs in Athletic Training.The Social Work program is approved by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). The Behavioral Health courses are approved by the Pennsylvania Certification Board. The Business Department has the approval of the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP).

The Alvernia University International Students Scholarships covers several levels of support ranging from $10,000 to $22,000 per year as a merit award.

Eligibility for Alvernia University International Students Scholarships

The Alvernia University International Students Scholarships are offered to each admitted international freshman and transfer student wishing to earn an undergraduate degree as a traditional day student at our main Reading campus.The Alvernia University International Students Scholarships are renewable for four years (up to eight semesters), all in the same amount. Note that scholarships cannot be merged with any other award, including a government scholarship, so a candidate cannot apply for the scholarship if they are already receiving another financial award.

  • To be eligible for the scholarship, you must be a full-time, degree-seeking undergraduate student attending mostly daytime classes.
  • You must have earned a minimum 3.0 overall cumulative GPA by the May 1 scholarship application deadline to be qualified.
  • Applicants must meet English proficiency and financial specifications.
