SOAS is one of the world’s primary institutions for the study of Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. Its library is one of the five national research libraries in the UK. SOAS also houses the Brunei Gallery, which hosts a program of changing modern and historical exhibitions from Asia, Africa, and the Middle East to present and promote cultures from these regions.

The campus is situated in the Bloomsbury area of central London, close to Russell Square. It contains College Buildings (the Philips Building and the Old Building), Brunei Gallery building, 53 Gordon Square (which houses the Doctoral School), and, since 2016, the Paul Webley Wing (the North Block of Senate House). The school houses the Brunei Gallery, built from an endowment from the Sultan of Brunei Darussalam, the leader of a country whose human rights abuses are ongoing, and inducted by Princess Royal, as Chancellor of the University of London, on 22 November 1995. The scholarship offers an impact towards fees up to a maximum of £5,353. The scholarship is for one year only.

Eligibility for the Saraswati Dalmia Scholarship

  • The Saraswati Dalmia Scholarship is open to Home/EU and overseas applicants.
  • Applicants for Saraswati Dalmia Scholarship are expected to have an exceptional academic record, usually, a 2.1 or first in their undergraduate degree, and must generally possess or expect to be presented a Merit or Distinction in their Master’s Degree.
  • New applicants to the MPhil/Ph.D. program (new admissions, starting in September 2022), must 
  1. Have gotten a firm offer to study by the time the Scholarship Panel meets to discuss applications.
  2. Have confirmed in the research proposal of their application for admission that their research is in the field of Indian art from 1500 up to the present day. Preference will be particular to those who undertake research in the field of modern and contemporary Indian art.
  3. Meet the English language condition of their offer of admission to study at SOAS as soon as possible but no later than 2 June 2022.  If your offer is conditional on English, kindly arrange your English test and confirm you meet the English requirements as soon as possible.
  4. Kindly note that most scholarships do not cover funding or even allow for Pre-sessional. Please check the wording of your scholarship bid carefully to see if you are eligible for a Pre-sessional course or whether you need to attain SOAS direct entry scores by the deadline quantified in your scholarship terms and conditions.
